Title: Day 1 - Mesa Verde National Park Trip

Date: May 23, 2026

Location: Holbrook, AZ

Weather: Sunny and Clear

Today we dropped off Nala at the vet to be boarded and headed out of town towards Mesa Verde National Park in Southern Colorado. I was somewhat hesitant to leave Nala because she has never been boarded before. I’ll call tomorrow to see how she did on her first day.

We are spending the night in Holbrook, AZ near the Petrified Forest National Park. The most incredible thing that happened today was when we descended in the Salt River Canyon and crossed the river. I had no idea the canyon existed and how amazingly beautiful it was. I thought that kind of beauty was pretty much reserved for national parks, well-known places such as the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Yosemite. I wondered “why haven’t I heard of this place before and why isn’t it jammed with tourists? " (Happy about the lack of tourists). We need to return and I made Jerry promise that we would stop on our way back from Mesa Verde.

Overall, the 4 hour trip was very beautiful and we crossed though so many varying landscapes, plants and climates. I wonder how my European cousins would react to the size and variety of our nation. It is truly a “Big Country”! (And we haven’t left the state of Arizona yet).
