Pikes Peak Cog Wheel Train

First Impressions

The Pikes Peak Cog Wheel Train offers a unique way to experience the beauty of the Colorado Rockies. The train's historic location and the stunning mountain views create an unforgettable first impression.

What We Saw

The train ride itself is a highlight, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The train cars, track and all buildings seen by visitors today were replaced beteen 2017 to 2021. The modern amenities are very comfortable and the experience is very European in nature partially due to the new Swiss train cars.

Highlights

The train trip starts near Manitou Springs and offers a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. Once the trip is underway one observes waterfalls, forest scenery and many types of wildlife. We saw many marmots and other animals in their natural habitat.

Good To Know

The train operates all year round, but schedules may vary by season. In winter, a special snowplow train runs to clear the tracks before the first passenger train departs. Remember to bring a credit card for any purchases since the depot and the visitors center at the top of the peak do not accept cash. One can reach the depot by car (arrange for parking online and do not arrive too early) or by taking the shuttle from the Manitous Springs

Would We Go Again?

Yes. We would go on this train again even though the fare is quite pricey and parking at the depot is limited and also expensive.

Worth The Drive? Yes, this is the most convenient way to see the top of Pikes Peak

Best Feature: The views both on the train and from the top

Watch Out For: Limited parking and expensive fees. Limited time at the top (about 40 minutes)

Overall Rating: ★★★★
