This museum is a HIDDEN GEM! The lady at the front desk admitted that the local population tends to ignore the treasure in their midst. It is so much bigger than it looks from the outside and has an amazing collection of early native art (Mimbres, Mogollon, Ancestral Pueblo, Salado), local photographs and documents, mineral treasures and artwork.
We spent about 90 minutes wondering around the museum after a brief discussion with the docent/receptionist. I was most interested in seeing the ancient pottery collection but we did our due diligence by seeing other parts of the museum first. We viewed mastadon bones, arrowhead collections, a intact miner's cabin (loaned by the US Forest Service), and countless photos and memorabilia donated by the local population. The two most amazing things we saw were the ancient native American pottery collection and a mural painted by Dobe Joe, an itinerant cowboy painter. The mural was discovered behind the walls of one of the museum rooms and painted in the 1930s. I will defintely be doing more research on this cowboy painter and his works.
Geronimo Springs Museum possesses a collections of ancient Native American ceramics that would be welcomed by any major history or art museum. I was astounded by the quantity and quality of work. Unfortunately, may of the pieces have no or minimal signage. (some wonderful billionare should be convinced to give the museum a few million in pocket change in order to give this collection a proper display!)
The museum is open most days and has a friendly staff. Obviously like most small local museums it lacks the funds for fancy displays and signage. Take this into account when visiting - this is not the Smithsonian!
Absolutely! I'm sure I'll discover more treasures on my next visit!
Worth The Drive? Absolutely
Best Feature: The ancient Native American pottery collection.
Watch Out For: Limited signage and low light levels for displays. Lots of displays dealing with Ralph Edwards and his relationship to Truth or Consequences.
